King Metal

What is now Bowser’s Kingdom used to be called the Metal Kingdom, and it was ruled over by King Metal. He was also referred to as King Iron-Fist for his dictatorial ways. Many hated him, but not many wanted to mess with him as he was very strong and ruthless. He had no qualms with getting his claws dirty, so to speak.

Kamek didn’t really have a say in becoming his advisor. Kamek was well-known as a powerful mage, so King Metal gave him a “choice”: become his (chief magical) advisor or rot in prison. Kamek “chose” to be his advisor.

One day, King Metal died. It was quite sudden and mysterious in some ways—no mention of any illness or assassination attempts, nor was an autopsy actually done to truly determine what had happened, as far as the public is aware. Not many cared much, though; all that mattered was that a burden had been lifted from the kingdom. It was the cause for much celebration (except from the rare few unflinchingly loyal to King Metal...).

Still, eyes turned to Kamek and whispered rumors followed. Some say he used his close position to kill the king—poison being the most common method pointed to. (Some royal higher-ups are even aware of these rumors, and politely deny any drink or food offered to them when Bowser brings Kamek to any royal gatherings.) Following from those rumors, others speculate that Kamek is planning to strike again with Bowser, and from the fall-out of losing an actually beloved ruler, instate himself as ruler.

Bowser, although somewhat aware of King Metal and what he did, has no idea about these rumors. However, he would defend Kamek if anyone tried to suggest that the Magikoopa would assassinate him as well.

So did Kamek actually do it? Only a handful know the truth... But as for if he would assassinate Bowser, the answer is a huge no. Bowser is his son.
