Waluigi

Throughout his life, Waluigi has felt like most people view him as just a joke thanks to his eccentricities and mish-mash of hobbies (in part because of bullying he went through as a child). He’s worked hard his whole life trying to combat this view and get people to see him as someone legitimate—he graduated with honors at the Royal Tennis Academy, he’s won various sports tournaments, royalty comes to purchase floral arrangments from him as a freelance florist, he had a stint as a successful banjo player in a bluegrass band, et cetera—but it never seems to be enough.

It’s part of why he doesn’t want to join the Super Smash Bros. tournaments. He feels like the Miis, Crazy Hand and some of the smashers only want him on as a joke. He also hasn’t become an employee under Wario for this reason as well; he feels like it would only add fuel to the fire for him to appear as if he had to rely on Wario for finances. (It is also for this reason that he’s denied any help Wario has offered with regards to buying him a home or getting his landlord to back off, since Waluigi lives in an apartment in Diamond City and Wario owns a sizeable portion of the city.)

Waluigi is working on his insecurities and low self-esteem, however. As an adult, he has built up a very supportive group of friends, including Wario, the WarioWare characters and many of the unique human characters that we see in the Mario Tennis series. And there are people who are very impressed by his work! There aren’t many people who can be so talented in such different activities.

Waluigi is also actually partly Hylian, which is why he has pointed ears. His ancestors were from a group of Hylians who found a rift between universes and migrated from the universe of The Legend of Zelda to the universe of Super Mario. His parents are just normal (Hylian) humans—very run-of-the-mill. They are very supportive of Waluigi and naturally worry over him a good amount (the Lucien incident really gave them a fright).

His parents are a little iffy on Wario because of his reputation as a stingy businessman, but he does seem to make Waluigi genuinely happy, so that works for them. As for what Wario and Waluigi are to each other, no one knows but them. The two are really close—Waluigi’s apartment is basically a second home for Wario with how often he is there—but they aren’t related. Waluigi and Wario don’t really label the relationship.
